Gallipoli has two different ports. The first one is called Fishing port (or Ancient Port), located near the Greek fountain near the Rivellino area. The second one is the Cargo port that runs along one of the old Town walls of Gallipoli.
The Fishing port spreads for about 50 meters and it is used to moor the fishing boats, who carry out the fishing activity almost endless throughout the year.
Thanks to a series of restructurings, during the last years, the port of Gallipoli has been well improved. At sunset, when the vessels and fishing boats return, the Port of Gallipoli became a very picturesque scenery to admire.
The cargo port of Gallipoli has an area of 80,000 square meters extension along a part of the Old Town. The marina instead, stands along the promenade near the railway station of Gallipoli.
In 1480, the port of Gallipoli was completely renovated by the Venetians and, later, by the Aragonese. At that time, the port of Gallipoli became a reference point for trade, especially olive oil and wine.
In 1850, after further improvements, the port became the most important of the Ionian Salento area. The port of Gallipoli is protected from the strong swells by two piers, the Outer dock and the Tramontana one.
Today the port of Gallipoli is an important commercial hub and during the summer also a major tourist stop. Indeed, in addition to being the preferred landing point by many tourists, the port of Gallipoli has also an area large enough to accommodate outdoor concerts and events. For many years, in addition, the port of Gallipoli hosting an event of national importance: the Baroque Prize of the City of Gallipoli.
